The eradication of the black rat in the Tremiti Islands is proceeding, and during the activity, colleagues engaged in similar projects underway in other EU (or former EU) countries came to visit us, with whom there had already been meetings for some time, in presence and virtual and exchange of experiences.
In March 2022, 5 experts came from Croatia, involved in the LIFE Artina Project which takes place in the Lastovo Archipelago, right in front of the Tremiti Islands and visible from them on clear days; while at the end of April Karen Varnham, of the Royal Society for Protection of Birds (UK), currently involved in 2 similar LIFE projects, Biosecurity for LIFE and PanPuffinus! came to visit us.
In addition to being pleasant, these visits are essential to improve the effectiveness of working methods. This type of operations are carried out by adopting protocols gradually updated worldwide, but each island is different, the difficulties encountered are different, and the comparison with other experts allows to collect more experiences, and therefore makes it easier to identify the suitable solutions. for each problem you encounter.
In fact, both visits were very useful and allowed us to make slight improvements to our way of working, and we are sure that the visiting friends have gathered useful information to improve the work in their islands.
