Laura Bambini visits the Tremiti Islands with her biosecurity dogs.

May, the month of Manx shearwater hatching, Cory’s shearwater laying eggs… and no traces of rats on the #TremitiIslands!!!

This month, thanks to the support of @parcogargano, we had the great pleasure of hosting @Laura Bambini on the Tremiti Islands.

Laura works for the @rspb #royalsocietyfortheprotectionofbirds as a Senior Project Manager on the Seabird Island Restoration Project and joined us with her two detection dogs, trained to report the presence of rats on the islands.

The use of detection dogs is increasingly widespread in New Zealand and the United Kingdom, and represents a valuable tool for monitoring the islands during the final phase of eradication and during biosecurity checks.

The dogs, as well as the checks of all biosecurity dispensers, confirmed the absence of traces of rats on the islands.

The last trace of a rat dates back to December 2022.

With the #Diomedea breeding season at its peak and tourists returning to the Islands, we want to celebrate this great achievement in terms of benefits for #Biodiversity and the local population, reminding everyone that everyone’s small gestures are precious to achieve great results.

Thank you again everyone, and keep an eye out for suspicious signs or tracks!
