the Blue Crab – An alien species to control

The Blue Crab, Callinectes sapidus, is an alien species to the Mediterranean Sea.

It is native to the Atlantic coasts of America and has most likely spread to our seas through the ballast waters of ships coming from the areas of origin.

The blue crab reaches considerable size and is a large predator of gastropods, bivalves and small crustaceans.

In addition to representing a danger to small-scale coastal fishing, this species can pose a serious threat to biodiversity.

The Life Diomedee project, thanks to our experts from the University of Bari, has already implemented interventions to remove this species from some areas of the #Litorale Brindisino, in the #Parco delle Dune Costiere territory.
